Business and Education Partnerships in Washington
- Association of Washington Business
The Association is a statewide affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. It helped create the Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board and the WorkSource Employer Advisory Board. Among its objectives, the Association supports legislation that encourages programs to adequately prepare high school students for collegiate studies and ensures quality K-12 education through standards-based reform, including rigorous standards, assessments and accountability.
- EduGuide
EduGuide is a web-based nonprofit organization founded by former Boeing chairman and CEO Frank Shrontz in 1994 to build awareness and support for the state's education reform movement. EduGuide strives to brings school and communities together to work collaboratively to improve education, and particularly college readiness, for all students throughout Washington. EduGuide publishes original research on education issues and offers information and resources for parents, educators, and community and business leaders.
- Washington Roundtable
The Washington Roundtable is a nonprofit, public policy organization comprised of 40 chief executives representing major private sector employers throughout Washington State. Its highest education priority for 2007 is ensuring that the state legislature maintains the new standards-based graduation requirements and adopts a college-prep curriculum including four years of math and three years of science for all students. It leads efforts to advocate on behalf of these issues to the legislature and to build statewide support for education reform.
- Washington Math Engineering Science Achievement
Washington MESA is a nonprofit organization committed to excellence in mathematics and science education for underrepresented groups. Washington MESA, in direct collaboration with three Washington universities and over 80 business partners, has developed six MESA centers in high-need regions, reaching 28 school districts. These centers offer instructional opportunities, professional development, and college and career awareness programs. Many volunteers from the business community serve on either Center Advisory Boards or the MESA State Board and help arrange for company tours by MESA students, provide job-related visits to MESA classrooms or participate as role-models at MESA information sessions.
- Washington State Leadership and Assistance for Science Education Reform (LASER)
LASER, a partnership program that started in 1999 with the National Science Resources Center, the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Battelle Corporation, Pacific Science Center, and educational service districts and school districts from across Washington State, assists school districts with the implementation of an ongoing, inquiry-based science program that is based on a research-based model of systemic reform and aligned with the Washington State Science Grade Level Expectations. It helps build sustainable community partnerships, provides professional development, coordinates the ordering of necessary resources and technical assistance and assesses curriculum, instruction and other programs related to science education. Business leaders sit on the board of trustees and LASER receives funding from both public and private sources.
