Business and Education Partnerships in Oregon
- Chalkboard Project
Launched in March 2004, the Chalkboard Project is an independent and nonpartisan group formed by a collaboration of five foundations that aims to create a more informed and engaged public who understands and addresses the tough choices and trade-offs required to build strong public schools. It has conducted extensive opinion research and research on best practices, organized discussions with over 100 stakeholder groups and held over 40 focus groups throughout the state. Its Open Books program provides clear information on the financial performance of all Oregon schools and districts. It also offers Running Start, a two-part toolkit for parents and educators aimed at improving student achievement among Oregon's most at-risk youth.
- Employers for Education Excellence
E3 is a nonprofit organization, founded in 1996 by the Oregon Business Council, which works with employers and schools to raise student achievement. It is a resource for employers and other stakeholders looking to find ways to become involved in education reform. The Oregon Small Schools Initiative sponsored by E3 is a $25 million, multi-year statewide program seeking to transform large high schools into effective small school learning environments. E3 is a co-sponsor of the High School Institute with the Oregon Department of Education, Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory, Leaders Roundtable, GEAR UP and Leadership Matters. E3 also oversees the Partnership for Student Success, a program that links business, education, and civic leaders to form local leadership teams to improve education opportunities by establishing mentoring and tutoring programs and volunteer opportunities.
- Oregon Business Council
The Oregon Business Council is an association of more than 40 top business executives focused on public issues that affect Oregon. Founded in 1985, OBC is patterned after the national Business Roundtable. OBC worked directly with the legislature to develop and implement the Oregon Educational Act for the 21st Century. This work has become so important that OBC created a separate entity, Employers for Education Excellence (E3), to promote and nurture school improvement.
- Oregon Education Roundtable
The Oregon Education Roundtable is an independent, nonpartisan organization focused on improving P-20 education in Oregon, supported by the Oregon Business Council, the Lumina Foundation, and the Oregon Community Foundation. Comprised of over 20 business executives and five state legislators, the Roundtable is a forum for expertise and public views. It is also a source of findings and recommendations that education advocates and policymakers can take forward. It commissioned a series of six white papers to make the case for education reform, and offer recommendations, for increasing Oregon students' access to high quality education, based on Oregon's needs in the competitive economy.
