How Does Minnesota Stack Up?

Business and Education Partnerships in Minnesota

  • Minnesota Business Partnership
The Minnesota Business Partnership is composed of 100 chief executives representing many of Minnesota's largest companies. Much of its advocacy work in education focuses on raising standards, improving instruction, expanding school choice and governance opportunities and measuring progress to hold schools and teachers accountable. It works with the Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota on MBP Connections, a program that pairs students with business leaders. In 2006, MBP, the Minnesota High Tech Association, and the Minnesota Chamber worked with the Governor and legislature to pass legislation providing $500,000 toward Minnesota's participation in the international math and science assessment, TIMSS. MBP took the lead on successfully raising an additional $150,000 from the private sector, a stipulation of the public appropriation.

  • Minnesota Chamber of Commerce
The Minnesota Chamber is the state's largest business advocacy organization, representing over 2,600 businesses across Minnesota. It focuses its advocacy and lobbying efforts on over 40 economic issues, including K-12 and higher education. The Minnesota Chamber has written background papers for its members on the existing education funding and accountability systems in the state and offers recommendations to improve both in legislative sessions. It also advocated strongly for Minnesota to participate in the TIMSS.

  • Minnesota High Tech Association
The Minnesota High Tech Association was originally established in 1982 as an advisory council to promote technology-based industry in Minnesota. Although MHTA works closely with government and education leaders, it is an independent, nonprofit organization. In 1996, MHTA became the state affiliate for AeA. In collaboration with the Minnesota High Technology Foundation, MHTA incorporated a silent auction into the Minnesota Tekne Awards venue to raise money for scholarships and other education activities. MHTF also serves as fiscal agent for the 3M TWIST program, and has been involved as an advocate for other nonprofit education programs in Minnesota.

  • SciMathMN
SciMathMN is a nonprofit, statewide education and business coalition that advocates for quality K-12 science, mathematics and technology education based on research, national standards and effective practices. It offers K-12 math and science curriculum frameworks for educators, recommendations regarding math and science instruction for parents and information best practices for policymakers and business leaders. SciMathMN also conducts a professional development program, From Access to Application (A2A), which ties education and technology together.
